INTO THE WILD is based on a true story and the bestselling book by Jon Krakauer. After graduating from Emory University in 1992, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless (Hirsch) abandons his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.

A young man leaves his middle class existence for a life a adventure in the North American wilderness. His journey takes him to Alaska, where he must fight to survive in the harsh environment. He dies there because he was not prepared for the reality that Alaskan bush life offers. Alaska changes throughout the year and depending on what time of year you see it, it can range from pastoral to inaccessible. Living conditions can be relatively easy in the summers when the salmon are in the rivers and the days are long and fairly warm. The same site in the winter might be difficult to recognize, and exceedingly more difficult to survive in. I live here, not far from where Mr. McCandless lived out his final days. Do not come up here and expect idealism to keep you safe. Seriously, anyone who does what he did runs the risk of ending up like he did. There is no mercy in the true wilderness.
